Wig Care Guide

How to Care for Your Wig Beautifully

A well-cared-for wig will look softer, feel more comfortable and keep its natural-looking shape for longer. The right routine does not need to be complicated. It simply needs to be gentle and consistent.

Below you will find simple advice for synthetic wigs, human hair wigs and everyday storage.

How to care for a wig

Stylist note: wigs are more delicate than growing hair. They need specialist products, soft handling and time to dry naturally. Avoid rubbing, twisting or brushing when wet.

How to care for a synthetic wig

A synthetic wig needs gentle care to keep its shape, softness and natural-looking movement. After wearing, place it on a wig stand or head to help the cap and fibres return to their shape.

  • Store your wig on a stand after wearing it.
  • Style curly synthetic wigs with your fingers, not a brush.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb only when needed and never pull at the fibres.
  • Use products made specifically for synthetic wigs.
  • For longer styles, apply a conditioning spray from around 20–25 cm away.
  • Avoid too much touching, smoothing or pressing down with your hands.
Avoid heat: standard synthetic wigs should be kept away from hairdryers, straighteners, curling tongs, ovens, steam, saunas, grills and open flames. Only use heat tools if your wig is clearly marked as heat-friendly.

How to wash a synthetic wig

A synthetic wig does not need washing after every wear. For most people, every 3–4 weeks is enough. Wash it sooner if it has picked up cooking smells, smoke, product build-up or perspiration.

  1. Fill a bowl or basin with 1.5–2 litres of lukewarm water and add one tablespoon of synthetic wig shampoo.
  2. Place the wig fully into the water and leave it to soak for around 5 minutes.
  3. Gently press the wig in the water. Do not rub, twist or scrub.
  4. Replace the water with fresh lukewarm water and rinse by soaking. Do not rinse synthetic wigs directly under a running tap.
  5. For the final rinse, add one tablespoon of synthetic wig balm to 1 litre of water and gently press through.
  6. Place the wig on a towel and softly remove excess water.
  7. Leave it on a wig stand to dry naturally at room temperature.
Important: never brush a synthetic wig while it is wet. Wait until it is completely dry, then gently arrange the style with your fingers.

How to care for a human hair wig

Human hair wigs are made from real hair, but the hair no longer receives natural oils from the scalp. This means it can become dry if it is not cared for properly.

  • Keep your wig on a stand when you are not wearing it.
  • Store it away from strong smells, smoke, steam and direct heat.
  • Use specialist products for human hair wigs.
  • Limit heat styling where possible.
  • Use heat protection if you style with warmth.
  • Be careful around knots, lace and hand-tied areas.

How to wash a human hair wig

As a general guide, wash a human hair wig at least once a month, or more often if you wear it daily, exercise in it or use styling products regularly.

  1. Place the wig on a stand and gently detangle it with a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends.
  2. Wet the hair with a soft stream of lukewarm water, working from the crown down to the ends.
  3. Apply a small amount of wig shampoo and smooth it through the hair in the direction of growth.
  4. Clean the inside of the cap, as this part sits directly against the scalp.
  5. Rinse gently from top to bottom with lukewarm water.
  6. Apply conditioner or balm to the hair lengths only, avoiding knots and the base.
  7. Rinse again after a few minutes, using a soft downward flow of water.
  8. Blot with a towel. Do not rub or twist the hair.
  9. Leave to air dry on a stand, or use a cool, gentle hairdryer setting if needed.
Gentle care makes the difference: rubbing, pulling and heavy heat styling can shorten the life of a human hair wig.

Synthetic vs human hair wig care

Both types can look beautiful, but they need slightly different routines.

Synthetic wig care

  • Lower maintenance
  • Holds its style after washing
  • Needs protection from heat
  • Best dried naturally

Human hair wig care

  • Needs more conditioning
  • Can usually be styled more flexibly
  • Benefits from heat protection
  • Requires careful detangling
